Some we can, some we shouldn't. Fine wool and silk-blend rugs are dye-sensitive, and a rug lying directly on hardwood has no safe way to release moisture downward. That's how you get browning in the rug and cupping or staining in the floor underneath. We test dyes in an inconspicuous spot first. Low-risk wool with stable dyes can often be cleaned in place with controlled moisture and the rug lifted onto blocks. Silk blends, hand-knotted pieces, anything with bleeding dyes or a pet accident that has soaked the foundation gets taken off the floor and cleaned flat where we can control water, pH and drying. We tell you which category your rug falls into before we touch it, not after.

Soon, and sooner for wool. Urine wicks through the pile into the foundation and then sits between the rug and the finish on the hardwood, so you have two problems: the odor and the floor. Wool is alkaline-sensitive and urine salts will shift the dye if they sit. Call us as soon as you find it. In the meantime, lift the rug off the floor and get air under it, blot rather than rub, and don't pour a store enzyme product onto a wool or silk-blend rug. We'll usually treat that rug off the floor so the contamination gets flushed out rather than pushed around, and so we can see what condition the wood underneath is in.

Yes, and it's most of what we do here. In these houses the main floors are hardwood, stone and tile, so the wall-to-wall lives in bedrooms, closets, the stairs and media or screening rooms. That carpet doesn't take heavy traffic soil, but stairs wear at the nose of each tread, closets pick up dust and body oils along the walk path, and screening rooms collect spills that nobody mentions until the room is being used again. It's a smaller job than a whole-house clean and we price it that way.

What moves the number: how many rooms and stairs, whether rugs are cleaned in place or taken off-site, fiber and construction (a hand-knotted silk-blend piece is slower and more careful work than a synthetic bedroom carpet), fringe condition, and whether there's pet contamination that needs flushing rather than surface cleaning. If we open a rug up and find something we didn't see at the estimate, we stop and talk to you before doing anything that changes the price.
