Longer than it would inland, and that's the honest answer. From May through September the fog often doesn't burn off until midday and ambient humidity sits around 70% or higher, so carpet that would be dry in a few hours elsewhere can stay damp well past that here. We compensate with heavier extraction, pulling as much moisture back out as the machine will take, plus air movers across the pile and, in closed-up apartments or condos, a dehumidifier running while we work. We'll also tell you which windows to open and when, because opening up at 9am in June just brings damp air inside.

Usually most of it, yes. Sand is the dominant soil we deal with in Santa Monica, and it doesn't sit on the surface the way ordinary dirt does. Foot traffic drives it to the base of the pile where vacuuming can't reach it. Often it's the pad, not the carpet face. Salt air, slow drying and years of damp coastal conditions mean moisture works into the pad and backing, and that's where the odour lives. Cleaning the surface without addressing it just makes the smell stronger for a day or two. We treat the carpet and pad together with a deodorizer that works through the backing, then dry aggressively with airflow so nothing stays wet underneath. If a previous cleaner over-wet the carpet and left it to dry on its own in this climate, that's a common cause. If the pad is genuinely saturated or contaminated, we'll say so. Replacing it is sometimes the only real fix.
