Why does a cleaned mattress still smell the next day?

Usually because the foam is still wet. A mattress has no pad or subfloor beneath it. Whatever soaks in has nowhere to drain. That rules out the flooding approach used on tract-house nylon cut pile. Beds get the same low-moisture restraint we use on Berber and wool rugs. Dry vacuum first, controlled dwell, then extraction passes with heavy airflow behind them.
